I was jogging the five blocks over to my friend Tina's house after school. We'd probably talk about the usual: looking forward to graduation in just a few weeks, what we thought college would be like, dating real men. I couldn't wait to finally be treated like an adult. Turning 18 sure didn't work. I was still in high school, and my parents bossed me around like I was a kid.
I knew college would change everything, but that was scary too. What if I didn't know everything I was supposed to in order to be an adult? I knocked on the door expecting Tina to swing it open, but her older brother Tim appeared instead. He must've come back to town for his sister's graduation. He was one of those super smart guys. I'd heard he didn't even need to go to graduate school; he already owned his own internet company.
"Hey. I think I remember you. You're Heather, right?"
No one called me Heather anymore. I'd been Rebecca since I turned 16. "Rebecca, actually." it was a kind hard to catch my breath after running all that way. I tugged on my sweat shorts that always crept up too high when I ran in them. They were my favorites though, low on the hips so they showed my belly button piercing I got the summer before.
"Ah, I see. Well, Tina's not here. Our mother took her shopping. They'll probably be back in a couple of hours or so." I hadn't seen Tim in a long time. He was kinda darling in a teacher sort of way.

I was thinking about telling Tim I was going to leave a note for Tina in her room but ended up putting my ear against his door and listening instead.
"You better take advantage of that soon, Steve. You know you can't once you take that teacher's aid job." I figured he must be talking on the phone to a friend. "You know the Sexy Blonde Maidens ones don't learn the skills in high school. Someone's got to show them the ropes." He laughed. "It might as well be us, right? Yeah. I'll call you this weekend. Bye."
I heard the phone hit the receiver and tiptoed away from the door. I started searching Tina's room for a piece of paper, but Tim's words kept replaying in my head. I just heard it straight from an older guy's mouth. I'm still going to be just another Sexy Blonde Maidens in college unless I learn how to be a Sexy Blonde Maidens before then.
I scribbled a note for Tina and then knocked on Tim's door. "Yeah? Come in," he answered.
I stepped just inside the door. "I was just wondering, since I already told my mom I'd be hangin' out with Tina for a while anyway, maybe you could help me with my graduation speech?" I used my sweetest smile and hoped he'd invite me into his room.
"Well, I guess I could. Come on in." He patted the spot on the bed next to his lap.

"So, what's the speech about?" He was so sweet and really wanted to help me. I couldn't even pull off my lie though. Not a single idea popped into my head, and I just sat there like a bump on a log. "Rebecca, you don't really need help with your speech, do you?"
"Not really." My nose scrunched up the way it does when I'm caught lying. I can't help it. I know I'm going to be told my punishment next.
But Tim didn't even get mad at me. "That's all right. What can I help you with?" I knew when he put his hand on my knee that he really did care. I thought I'd start practicing to be an adult by telling the truth.
"Well, I heard you talking on the phone. And honestly, I'm scared about going to college next fall. I don't know what to expect. I don't want the guys to think I'm just a dumb Sexy Blonde Maidens." I realized I was making a pouting face, the one that always made Dad mad and he told me to wipe off.
I could tell Tim was really listening though. The way his eyebrows bunched up together made him look so mature. I was beginning to see what made men different from boys. They took you seriously. "Well then, what will make you feel more confident? I'm here to help."
I couldn't help looking down at the bulge at Tim's crotch. it was a kind automatic. I didn't see Tim much after that, and Tina and I were running around like crazy to get ready for graduation. The ceremony was everything we hoped for, and it felt like our lives were finally changing.
